Spring 2008 Non-Credit
Class Schedule
ADULT EDUCATION INSTITUTE
The Adult Education Institute offers several
programs free of charge to eligible students through the support of
Prairie
State College, federal and state grants. All students receive an
academic
assessment of their skills in order to place them in the proper course
of instruction. Classes are offered during the day, evenings and on
Saturdays
at various locations throughout the College district. All programs are
open to persons 16 years of age or older and not enrolled in public
school.
ADULT LITERACY
This program is available to those
persons who are unable to read, write or do basic math. Students are
matched
with a trained tutor for one-on-one instruction. Students progress at
their
own rate under an individualized program of instruction.
ADULT BASIC EDUCATION
ABE classes are offered for students
who need to improve their basic skills.
GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT
GED classes are offered for students
who need instruction before taking the high school equivalency exam.
The
course of instruction covers five areas of study that are tested on the
GED exam: English, social studies, science, reading and math.
Preparation
and testing for the Illinois Federal Constitutions are also available.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
The ESL program is open to those persons
whose native language is not English. The purpose of the program is to
teach skills in speaking, reading, writing and listening to English.
This
program is designed to help people make the transition from different
countries
and cultures to American society.
FAMILY LEARNING INSTITUTE
The Family Learning Institute provides
adult education programs for parents who have less than a high school
education
or whose native language is other than English. Programs include:
- GED (in English and Spanish)
- English as a Second Language (ESL)
- Parenting Workshops
- Typing and Computer Workshops
- Job Skills Workshops
An onsite child care program is provided
for children between 1 year and 8 years of age. In this program, the
children
learn to play with others, develop motor skills and begin to learn the
joy of reading. Approximately one hour each week, parents join their
children
for a planned learning activity facilitated by the child care staff.
Classes are held at several off-campus locations. These sites
include: Washington-McKinley School; Sauk Trail Elementary School; St.
Paul's Church, Chicago Heights; and Happy Hours Head Start, Chicago
Heights.
WORKPLACE LITERACY PROJECT
The Workplace Literacy program is
designed for businesses and labor organizations that want to improve
the
personal and educational skills of their organizations. The program is
custom designed to each organization and includes assessment, planning,
confidential testing and instruction based upon work requirements.
